Kyoto Tea Ceremony and Gion Walk
Duration: 3 Hours
From: Gion-Shijo station, exit 6
To: Yasaka shrine, west gate
Languages: English, Japanese
A tea ceremony in a Gion machiya, then the lanes of Higashiyama at the hour the geiko set out.
The afternoon begins in a townhouse tea room off Hanamikoji, where a tea master takes the group of six through the ceremony slowly enough to follow and quietly enough to feel. Then a walk: Yasaka shrine, the stone lanes of Ninenzaka and Sannenzaka, and back down through Gion as the lanterns come on and the ochaya open their doors.
Shoes come off for the tea room; socks are a good idea.
